I am teaming up with Marissa of Pura Prana Flow to offer you a canoe-hike-yoga retreat in Killarney’s wilderness.

As we embark on the most classic of wilderness adventures—the quintessential canoe trip—we do so with a Quiet twist.

Every inch of this adventure invites you into the present moment. Waking up to a symphony of birdsong as the morning light shines through your tent. The warmth of the fire by your feet as you take your first sip of coffee. The soft swish of your paddle moving through water as you take the day’s first strokes.

Of course we can’t control the wind, the waves or the weather.

If a headwind blows waves at our bows or if the sky clouds over and rain starts to fall, we treat these moments as an obstacle course to mindfulness—we practice the presence that grounds us as the world around us whirls. In challenge, too, we find ourselves centered. We treat the portage trails as our training grounds. We enjoy the satisfaction of being present and prepared for any obstacle.

When the sun breaks back through the clouds we take an extra long breath and enjoy the warmth of its glow.

Our days on these trips will vary. Sometimes we’ll get an early start and make miles from campsite to campsite. Other times we’ll find an island and set up camp for multiple nights so we can choose how we’d like to spend our days: resting, writing and watching the clouds, or exploring our surroundings.

There will be time to be solo and time to connect—time to find your quiet together and apart.

Note: The route for this Killarney canoe trip will be Bell Lake, David Creek, David Lake, Balsam Lake, and back to Bell Lake. Beginners welcome!

Day 1
Meet Up:

We will meet you at the access point on the morning of Day One. After collecting our camping permits, we’ll meet for a brief trip orientation to wilderness camping and canoe tripping. Get to know who you’ll be paddling with, ask your questions, and we’ll double check that your gear is waterproofed, if you require. Then we will load the canoes and launch into our canoe adventure.

After a brief paddling lesson on the water, we will set off from the put-in and head out to find the first campsite.

Once we find our campsite, you’ll set up your tents, gather firewood and explore the area before dinner. Marissa from Pura Prana Flow will lead us in a gentle yoga practice. Then enjoy quiet time around the fire listening to the loons or the occasional barred owl, before bed.

Distance paddled: 8-10 kilometers

Portage: ~945 meters (over 2 portages)

Overnight: Tent camping

Day 2
Base Camp Day (or We Can Hike):

Today we base camp. The day is yours. We can start and end the day with yoga. We can go for a leisurely paddle. You can sit and read a book. We can make Malas. And/or we can go for a challenging hike to Silver Peak in the La Cloche mountain range.

Distance paddled: 0-8 kilometers round trip

Distance hiked: 6-7 kilometers round trip (moderate to difficult)

Day 3
Let's Paddle:

These are the perfect days to rejuvenate in nature and let the day unfold magically. We will start our morning with a quiet yoga practice before packing up camp (after a hearty breakfast, of course) to head further into the wilderness by canoe, warming up our senses while paddling and portaging through the next two lakes, finding a rhythm, getting into the tripping groove.

We’ll find a campsite and set-up camp, enjoy another hearty meal overlooking the water and then rest. As the sun sets, we’ll stretch out any tired or sore muscles before laying our head down for the night.

Distance paddled: 9-12 kilometers

Portage: 665 meters (moderate difficulty)

Meals: B, L, D

Overnight: Tent camping

Day 4
Head On Out:

We will get an early start, breaking camp and paddling out, completing the loop of our canoe route. We will paddle across two more lakes and save the best until last – a paved 30m portage! And once that is complete, we paddle back to our vehicles. We will get off the water early afternoon to have one final picnic lunch and then say our good byes.

Portages: 30 meters

  • Canoe guides (ratio of 1:5)
  • All group equipment – canoes, tents, camping gear
  • All meals from lunch day 1 to lunch day 4
  • Park permits (three nights) in Killarney Provincial Park
