Bon Echo Beginner Backpacking Trip - 3 Days

Bon Echo backpacking trip

We are waiting on information from Ontario Parks (as of May 26th) to see if it’s possible to reschedule this trip for the summer of 2020. Please stay tuned. And send us an e-mail (form below) if you’re keenly interested in this trip.

Our hiking trips are an experiment with this paradox: how do you pair present moment mindfulness with the work of striving towards a goal?

Whether it’s a steep ascent to the next big viewpoint or a lakeside campsite to call home, we’ll move towards our destinations with intention. At a pace that gives space for the benefits of being in nature to make their presence known.

On the first day of this trip, we’ll sort through all our clothing, food and equipment to make sure we have everything we need and not a whole lot more. Then we’ll balance our packs and take our first few satisfying steps with the sweet simplicity of having everything we need on our backs.

On hiking trips there is always a measure of challenge. By nature it serves up the exact kind of adversity that makes the view from the top of a hill so sweet. You’ll feel the kind of strength that only flows from a measure of struggle. And then you’ll drop your bag, unlace your boots and bask in the depth of ease that only follows effort.

Day 1
Meet at the Abe & Essens Trailhead

We’ll meet at the parking lot to the trailhead at lunchtime. Over lunch we’ll sort out our gear and food and double-check our waterproofing.

Then we’ll hike into our first campsite, taking our time to notice what signs of spring have returned to central Ontario.

We’ll get settled in at our first campsite, enjoy a hearty meal, and turn in for a well-deserved night’s rest.

Distance Hiked: ~3 kilometers

Meals: L, D

Overnight: Tent camping

Day 2
On the Trail

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll pack up our belongings and continue along the Abe and Essens trail to our next campsite.

There will be time for breaks, to soak in whatever Mother Nature wants to share with us, and to go at a pace that feels manageable.

We’ll end our day with a warming fire, a stick-to-your-ribs meal, and the calls of the first spring peepers to emerge from icy hibernation.

Distance Hiked: ~10 kilometers

Meals: B, L, D

Overnight: Tent camping

Day 3
Back to Where We Started

We love loops. They give us the chance to discover how much we’ve changed in the short time we’ve been on them.

This one is no different. After breakfast, we’ll pack up our belongings one more time and make our way back to the trailhead. Your guide will keep you present on the trail, sharing stories about tracks observed, plants making an appearance, or early birds calling.

After one last lunch, we’ll say our good-byes and be on our way home.

Distance Hiked: ~5 kilometers

Meals: B, L

Overnight: none
